How to Reach Montpellier

Montpellier is accessible by train, air, and ferry. In line with the conference’s commitment to sustainable mobility, participants are encouraged to prioritize rail and other low-carbon transport options whenever possible.

 

By train
Montpellier has two main stations: Montpellier Saint-Roch (city center) and Montpellier Sud de France (high-speed hub). Both are served by TGV, AVE, Thalys, Eurostar, and other international services, ensuring direct or nearly direct connections across Europe.

 

  • Western & Central Europe
    • France: Paris (3h30), Lyon (1h40), Marseille (1h20), Toulouse (2h10), Nice (4h30), Lille (5h), Strasbourg (5h30).
    • Belgium & Luxembourg: Brussels and Luxembourg via Paris or Lille.
    • Netherlands: Amsterdam via Paris or Lille.
    • United Kingdom & Ireland: London (via Paris or Lille with Eurostar + TGV); Dublin via ferry to Cherbourg or Roscoff, then train.
    • Germany & Switzerland: Basel, Geneva, Zurich, and Frankfurt via Lyon; Berlin with 1–2 changes.
    • Austria: Vienna and Salzburg via Munich and Lyon.

 

  • Central & Eastern Europe
    • Poland: Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław via Berlin and Paris.
    • Czech Republic: Prague via Munich and Paris.
    • Slovakia: Bratislava via Vienna and Lyon.
    • Hungary: Budapest via Vienna and Lyon.

  • Southern Europe & Mediterranean basin
    • Spain: Barcelona (3h), Madrid (6h30).
    • Italy: Turin and Milan via Lyon, with onward connections to Florence and Rome.
    • Portugal: Lisbon and Porto via Madrid.
    • Greece: Athens and Thessaloniki via ferry to Italy (Patras–Bari/Ancona), then train.
    • Albania: Durrës via ferry to Bari, then train connections northwards.
    • Turkey: Istanbul via Sofia–Belgrade–Vienna or ferry to Italy.
    • Morocco: travel is possible by combining ferry and train. Ferries from Tanger or Nador connect to southern Spain (Algeciras, Almería, Málaga), with onward rail links across Spain to Barcelona, then direct high-speed trains to Montpellier.

 

  • Northern Europe
    • Denmark: Copenhagen via Hamburg and Paris.
    • Sweden: Stockholm and Gothenburg via Copenhagen and Hamburg.
    • Finland: Helsinki via Stockholm and Copenhagen.

 

By air

  • Montpellier Méditerranée Airport (MPL) is located only 7 km from the city center (15 minutes by shuttle or taxi), with direct flights to several French and European destinations.
  • Major nearby international airports—Marseille (MRS), Lyon (LYS), Toulouse (TLS), Nice (NCE), and Barcelona (BCN)—offer numerous intercontinental connections, all linked to Montpellier by train or bus.
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY) connect directly to Montpellier by high-speed train, avoiding domestic flights.

 

By ferry

  • The ports of Sète (30 km from Montpellier), Marseille, Toulon, and Barcelona are served by ferries from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sardinia, Corsica, and the Balearic Islands.
  • From these ports, Montpellier is reachable in under two hours by train or bus.
